SignSwap was launched on the 3rd of July 2004 by Bilby Publishing & Consulting Pty. Ltd. In it's first year it served a million images over the internet to thousands of visitors every week. Within 6 months the site had outgrown it's origional server and had to be moved to a larger one that could handle the extra traffic produced when Bilby Publishing produced a poster for Hearing Awareness Week 2005, and gave it away to every public library in Australia.

Sign Swap is used mostly by teachers and educators, but also sees use by Professional Therapists, parents and carers, child care centres, libraries, councils, government departments at the state and federal level, and many many more.

Sign Swap is free for all users, not even requiring registration, following the Bilbys' belief that access to AUSLAN sign language should be free for ALL Australians. We have put our "product where our mouth is" by creating this website and continuing to support it. We encourage others with similar motivations to put up some money to ensure the sites survival, whether through sponsoring a page, taking out banner advertising, or sponsoring the production of new sign images.

Sign Swap is based on the database and images behind the PC CD-Rom Sign With Me This is where the category (and as of March 2005, Learning Level lists) originally came from. Many of the images have also come from the CD-Rom, but the size (and thus quality) has been reduced to enable quick access over the internet.
Do not be fooled, Sign Me Me has many other features not available here, the most important being the ability to translate almost all the words in a sentence into strips of sign images, with the ability to edit and select whether to use signed english filler words.
It is also a much more useful product, allowing you to format your text and images before printing.
