Nursery Rhyme, First Dictionary and Sign About Board Books by Child's Play
AUSLAN EDITIONS ONLY AVAILABLE THROUGH US!
Child's Play are an international company based in the UK. They specialise in educational products for babies and young children.
There are now 11 Nursery Rhyme Books, and 6 other signing titles available through us.
While these titles have been produced utilising BSL (British Sign Language) most signs used are the same as those used in AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language).
Most discrepancies to AUSLAN are commonly used substitutions, such as "milk", where the AUSLAN is often simplified by/for babies and toddlers.
Nursery Rhyme titles all contain only Auslan Signs. For all other titles Bilby Publishing provides AUSLAN translation sheets that detail the differences between
those signs depicted and Auslan (Australian Sign Language). Most titles only contain 1-3 variations.
Nursery Rhyme Board Books
Using simple sign language, children who communicate before they speak have a head start in their
development. Help your child to develop a basic sign vocabulary by signing familiar nursery rhymes !
There are now 11 beautifully illustrated Nursery Rhyme board books to choose from!
Each of these titles are brilliantly illustrated by Annie Kubler and Anthony Lewis, depicting children signing the keywords within each of these popular nusery rhymes.
While the books have been produced utilising BSL (British Sign Language) ALL signs used within the Nursery Rhyme series are correct in Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
5 of these books include commonly used sign simplifications, to make signing easier for little fingers. These signs are documented within the books.
What are the substitutes?
Twinkle Twinkle : "star". In Auslan we tap the middle finger on the thumb, the book depicts all fingers wiggling.
Baa Baa Black Sheep : "live". The sign in the book is correct in some areas of Australia, however there is also an alternative sign depicted
Teddy Bear Teddy Bear : "teddy". The sign in the book is common substitution in Auslan. The more formal Auslan sign is also depicted.
Humpty Dumpty : "horse". The sign used for horse is commonly used in Auslan for jockey/horse rider. There is an alternative sign for 'horse', which is also depicted.

Awards and additional Information
Both the 'My First Signs' and the 'Sign and Sing Along Series' by Annie Kubler won the prestigous Practical Pre-School Awards in 2004.
What the tester said:
"These books were popular and helped some of the quieter children to improve communication skills. Staff and children enjoyed learning the signs and some children found the books during free play and initiated reading with an adult. I found the illustrations appealing and the books very durable".
