Cochlear Implant - Parents tell their stories
This is a wonderfully presented, non-biased book providing an insight into the dilemmas faced by parents with a deaf
child. It tells the stories of nine Australian families with deaf children who have either had a Cochlear Implant or
chosen not to….the trials and decision making process, the after effect, the successes and the failures.
A must read for every parent considering a cochlear implant, but also for any parent of a deaf child!
This book does not only talk about deafness from the perspective of a cochlear implant, but provides the reader
an insight into the emotional roller coaster of the parents.
Each story begins at diagnosis and discusses, in the Parents’ own words, their personal journey to diagnosis and
the information, or lack of, provided to them at that time. It then follows the Parents’ journey through this time, the commencement of school,
the adoption of various language options (some using sign, others oral only and some total communication) and the roads and research in, that lead to those decisions.
Through the benefit of time and hindsight, the reader is also provided with the parents analysis of past decisions and of what worked and what did not and why.
A truly valuable read. We highly recommend this book.
"I really loved this book. I laughed, I Cried, and could not put it down!" Lee Bilby
