For the first time in Australia "Visual Stories" are now available nationally!
What is a visual story?
A visual story, like an “audio-story’ for the blind, is a visual presentation of a book for Sign Language users, such as Deaf Children.
With an estimated 1 million signing people within Australia and the prevalence of hearing loss in children projected to increase to 7.4%
in coming years, Visual Stories have been long overdue.
"Grandma Leaps the Antarctic", launched for Literacy and Numeracy Week, 28 August - 3 September 2006, is the first of a series of popular
children's stories to be released as part of the “Visual Storytelling Project”. This inaugural DVD includes three stories by Hazel Edwards,
renowned Australian children's author, and is set to revolutionise the way in which children are introduced to the wonders of Australian
literature.
Visual stories are important because historically, signing students have left school with reading levels of grade 3 or 4!
In the development of strong literacy programs for sign language dependant children in recent years, there has been a realisation that
there are inadequate suitable reading materials for these students. Unlike their hearing/oral contemporaries, these students need a visual
approach to the development of good literacy skills. They need to understand the meaning of a book / story in their own language (AUSLAN)
before they can transfer to spoken and written English.
For the first time, signing children can now understand, appreciate and have fun reading books in Auslan!
Grandma Leaps the Antartic - Out Now!
